The Post-Star from Glens Falls, New York (2024)

Tt.escay, May 21, 1S96 The Post-Star, Giens Fas, Y. B5 LOCAL Assemblies to focus on Independent Living Center taps Blumberg to plan facility drug addiction alcohol, By Michael LaCross education, counseling and support Prior to moving to Glens Falls, Blumberg lived in Syracuse, where he founded and was president of a department store on the campus of Syracuse University. He also was founder and was a charter board member of Metropolitan Bank of New York, now Bank of New York. Blumberg is immediate past president of the Glens Falls YMCA, having served as treasurer for the prior two years. During his six-year affiliation with the YMCA, he participated on the Capital Building Fund Campaign Committee.

Blumberg and his wife, Patricia Geruso, live in Queensbury. They have six adult children and four grandchildren. Geruso is the founder and the executive director of Liberty House Foundation which provides vocational rehabilitation and employment services for individuals with handicapping conditions. GLENS FALLS' The Glens Falls Independent Living Center recently appointed Alvin R. Blumberg as director of facility development His primary responsibilities will be to design a master plan that establishes a strategy for the completion of a new agency facility, a center official said.

He will oversee all building and fund-raising activities for a campus of buildings planned to house the agency along with other organizations providing services for the disabled, according to Dr. David Welch, president of the Independent Living Center's board of directors. The first phase will be a million-dollar project Future construction will continue to address the need to consolidate human service providers for people with and without disabilities, Welch said. Blumberg will also play an active role in fund-raising activities and will promote public awareness of Mains and I "We usually don't have large assemblies," said Dingman. "And when we have had something, it hasn't really reached out and touched the faculty and the staff and the parents." Dingman said that parents have been notified by mail of the assemblies and warned of the emotional impacts it sometimes has on the students.

"Sometimes when we have these kinds of speakers in, it can create some emotion," she said. "Sometimes children are affected differently due to things that have happened in their family with recovery. So counselors will be available in case we have students who need extra support." In the afternoon, after the 45-minute student assemblies, a special 30-minute assembly for teachers and staff will be held, focusing on how adults can help students evolve into healthy, contributing students. In the evening, an hour-long assembly for parents and members of the community will discuss effective parenting, personal growth and strategies to prevent drug addiction in children. Dingman said everyone is urged to attend.

The "Running for Daylight" programs are taking place on Tuesday at the senior high school auditorium on East LaBarge Street in the village. The assemblies are scheduled for 9 a.m. for ninth-and lOth-grade students), 12:35 p.m. for 11th- and 12th-grade students, 2:40 p.m. for faculty and staff, and 7 p.m.

for parents and members of the community. Correspondent HUDSON FALLS Students, teachers and parents will be subjected to a dramatic dose of reality tonight when a guest speaker brings his program on the horrors of alcohol and drug addiction to the high school. Dan J. Davis is described as a reality therapist because of his brutal honesty about his fall into the abyss of addiction and his climb back to sanity and freedom. He will be bringing his "Running For Daylight" program to the Hudson Falls High School in a series of four assemblies for students, teachers and parents.

Davis a motivational speaker and prevention education specialist is a former star athlete and a recovering addict. He says that only one in 70 alcoholics will ever recover from their problem and that five will die for every one that lives. According to Rhonda J. Dingman, who chairs the substance abuse committee of the high school's building leadership team, there is a growing concern in the school and in the community about substance abuse. Last fall, her committee decided to address these concerns and arrange the assembly.

Using funds provided by the high school building committee and two local grants, she scheduled the Davis program. Alvin R.
