Twenty years ago this coming September a quiet, unassuming high school business teacher, Mr. Jerry Youngbeck, passed away in Grinnell, Iowa. He was my father’s typing teacher in the mid-1950s, and mine in the early-1980s. During a visit home on leave I found myself observing a poker game at the local Elks Club sitting between him and my father. Mr. Youngbeck started a conversation about my Army service, where I’d been, what I’d done. When it was my turn to ask about his service the answers were quiet, short and specific, Army, WWII, 4 ID, D-Day.It seems I walked, and typed, in the shadow of giants.https://lnkd.in/ePPDPAZR

I’m sure this unmanned aerial vehicle is an effective tool in the hands of a highly skilled and committed remote pilot operating at the tip of the spear. I hope the operator gets the credit for their life saving skills and actions vs defaulting to another piece of technology. It was a privilege and pleasure to be able to listen in to the Information Advantage Symposium via MSTeams . So many professional events, conferences, and symposiums seem to cater to members of the military industrial base that focus on capabilities and $, versus people and ideas. Fantastic to have organizations such as CGSC, ARLIS, IPA, USF-GNSI, ans NSI-SMA making these forums affordable and accessible. Below is a link to notes I took of the symposium.CGSC Inforation Advantage Symposium 2024 - Notes.docxhttps://lnkd.in/ehpipn5w#LearningbyDesign

Narratives don’t just exist, ideally they have a purpose in pursuit of a positive goal. They are more than stories and pictures. To reference a 1983 film “Eddie and the Cruisers”, they can be about words and music. Celebrate Memorial Day, honor the lost, remember those that are still not free, make a toast, show your colors.Few do words and music better than The Man in Black.

Memorial Day doesn’t just recognize the ultimate sacrifice of US Servicemembers, but also those of our trans-regional and trans-national Partners and Allies over the decades. This is photo of a memorial in Paris , France located where French Partisans and Allied Forces teammates (SOE, OSS, Jedburgh, etc) were held, tried, and executed. Would love to see similar images from other world travelers.

Innovation… it’s not just a sudden flash of inspiration and magical fairy dust. It takes a vision, dedicated effort, and the autonomy and resilience to recognize your value in the face of repetative “nos”. The Leatherman was a God send long before the Army started issuing Gerber Tools.

I propose the dichotomy of Ukraine winning and Russia losing misses the mark from a global and national security perspective. Sure we need Ukraine to win regionally, but we need to defeat Russia in a way that destroys its ability to influence, exploit, and bully our trans- regional partners. To achieve this will require a much larger effort and commitment than simply providing resources to Ukraine.

Unfortunately “AI” has become a marketing term much like “organic” with out any reliable standard.Replicating and networking 50+ year old scanner and pattern detection tech into a cell phone doesn’t make it AI. Sure it is convienent, but is a long way from Mycroft Holmes.
