now at three, addressing public safety concerns. oakland leaders

3:01 pm

are holding a town hall meeting tonight to talk with residents about their plan to keep the city safe and gearing up for labor day travel. the last minute tips you need to know if you're planning to fly or hit the roads. and we're in for a warm week ahead from the holiday forecast to when we'll see the heat here, we've got the details. good afternoon and thanks for joining us for abc seven news at 3:00. i'm stephanie sierra. our top story today is developing in alameda county. there's fallout in response to a video posted on tiktok. and now a 20 year veteran firefighter accused of making racist comments is now on administrative leave. >> the firefighter was off duty at the time of the incident. it's come to our attention that some language was used during the interaction that does not align with the values and standards we uphold as an organization. such behavior is not representative of who we are or the department or our values. we strive to embody every day. >> the viral tiktok video shows the firefighter getting into a

3:02 pm

road rage altercation with another driver, calling him a racial slur. we spoke to that other driver. >> i'd like to say you know, we get respected. i mean, everybody gets respected, not just browns, blacks, whites, yellow, purple. it doesn't it doesn't matter. you know, we all need to get respected and uh- we're living together. we, you know, we're not living apart. we're all living together. today's press conference. >> the alameda county fire chief says the department is taking immediate steps to improve their relationship with the community by doing outreach and having members undergo sensitivity training. he says appropriate disciplinary action that is, will be taken against the firefighter, depending on the outcome of this investigation. now, the president of the firefighters union issued the following response to the investigation, saying in part, quote, we are deeply troubled by the remarks made in the video.

3:03 pm

the comments made are contrary to our mission to serve all members of our community. the union says it will fully cooperate with this investigation. the san francisco bay area office of the council on american-islamic relations care also released this statement saying, quote, we welcome acfd. s decision to investigate the incident and urge a comprehensive and transparent process with decisive action to ensure this type of behavior is not tolerated within their ranks. now, also in the east bay, the search continues for the gunman who shot and killed a man at a berkeley homeless shelter. police responded to a call of shots fired in the area of seventh and harrison streets at about 5:00 yesterday evening. shelter residents say the victim lived there and was shot inside his room. it's still unclear what led up to the shooting. other shelter residents were evacuated for a short time while police investigated. this is berkeley's fourth homicide of the year. oakland residents will

3:04 pm

be able to express their concerns about violence in the city. at a town hall meeting tonight. mayor shengtao and police chief floyd mitchell are taking part in a series of town halls. on friday, they took questions from neighbors about police staffing, budget problems and working with prosecutors to see cases through. the chief called on community leaders to help kids from turning to violence. >> they're the elders of our communities and the mothers of our community that know that can help us pull these kids aside and say, hey, there's a better way. >> this evening's town hall starts at 530 at saint john's episcopal church. the town halls continue tomorrow, thursday and friday. now on to the presidential campaign. former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris are both holding rallies in battleground states this week. abc's em nguyen has the latest. former president trump at arlington

3:05 pm

national cemetery today marking the third anniversary of the terrorist bombing during the u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan. >> 13 u.s. service members were killed in the abbey gate attack at kabul airport in the final, chaotic days of the u.s. pullout. president trump h place three wreaths to the fallen today. >> we had a celebration of some great people, some great, great people who passed away, who were killed in the most embarrassing moment in the history of our country. >> vice president harris, releasing a statement today saying she will care for our troops and always honor their service and sacrifice while standing by president biden's right decision to end america's longest war. later this week, harris will head to georgia with running mate governor tim walz. her campaigne than half $1 billn last month, 82 million came in just last week during the democratic national convention.

3:06 pm

but both campaigns are also focusing on debate preparation ahead of their first face off on abc news. on september 10th. >> i'm not spending a lot of time on it. i think my whole life i've been preparing for a debate to counter the harris momentum in polls and fundraising. >> trump is set to barnstorm key battleground states of michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania this week. the harris campaign said today it does not want microphones to be muted during the debate with trump, a departure from the demand made by the biden campaign when the president was at the top of the ticket. when abc news, washington. >> abc seven news is your place when it comes to the presidential election. you can find complete coverage and live updates right on our website, abc seven news.com, and the abc seven news app. now, the oakland unified school district board will vote this week on what could become a historic contract extension for the district's superintendent. the vote is scheduled for wednesday. if the contract is approved, kyla

3:07 pm

johnson trammell will continue serving as superintendent for another three years. that would make her the longest serving superintendent in the district's history, with ten years in charge. oakland unified hasn't had a superintendent serve more than five years since 1970, and san francisco now free concerts have popped up across the city as an annual return or as new additions. and as abc seven news reporter tara campbell tells us, there's a belief they are pushing the city in the right direction. >> the sights and sounds of san francisco's stern grove music festival. >> we really want to be able to bring free live music to the community and make it accessible. >> for the past nearly 90 years, serving up head turning headliners like chaka khan for free. >> in today's world, concert tickets are so expensive and it's really hard for some people to be able to go see these amazing musicians. and we are trying to break that down and be

3:08 pm

able to provide that to people. >> the festival, drawing in roughly 90,000 people to the city each year from across the bay area and beyond. >> people are struggling right now financially, and so they might not want to splurge on entertainment. but it's important for human beings to socialize with one another and enjoy the arts. >> and the organizers of outside lands, the city's largest music festival, know exactly what it means for fans to descend on the city. that means hotel rooms, restaurants, ubers, retail taxes all of that. this past week, announcing it's now hosting a free concert at civic center in september. ooh, i'm a rebel just for kicks now with grammy award winning rock band portugal the man set to take the stage this on the heels of a paid, ticketed rave at civic center in may that drew in 25,000 people. meanwhile, back at stern grove, these concert goers say they're not surprised music is helping to bring back the city. >> the joy and, you know,

3:09 pm

families and people of all ages here, it's really it's part of the heart of san francisco and the bay area to have people interact and enjoy music together. >> these free concerts keep people together, keep people out of trouble. and it's just this whole bay area coming together to celebrate. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> great to see all that excitement. certainly something to look forward to. now up next. apple looks to make a splash in the world of ai. apple intelligence is coming to its new iphone. a tech reporter will join us live to talk about some of the special new features. and bringing baywatch back to living rooms across america, we have a sneak peek at the new docu series

3:10 pm

3:11 pm

3:12 pm

platform for apple intelligence. we're talking about a significant siri update and a slew of new camera and ai powered features. joining me live to discuss is abrar al-hindi, a tech reporter with cnet. abrar, thanks for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> so i see there's quite the list of new perks. can you walk us through some of the big new ai features? >> yeah, there's a lot that apple kind of threw at us a few months ago, and it's possible that they'll share more updates because these ai features aren't available to the public yet. so maybe that'll happen in the coming months. but one of the big things they talked about was a smarter series. so if you're like me, you've kind of been waiting for siri to get a little bit more conversational, a little bit more useful. that's something that'll be happening with the rollout of apple intelligence. you can also have ai powered writing tools. so if you're drafting a message, it's kind of baked in, similar to what other companies like google and samsung have rolled out

3:13 pm

recently. and the really big thing here is that, you know, when you're using something like siri on on the latest iphones, you'll have the option to actually use chatgpt. there will be an integration there so that if you want, you know, more thorough responses, more in-depth responses, you can access chatgpt from open ai. and really, the reason why that's important is because it'll open it up to more people. think about all the people who have iphones, who maybe haven't used chatgpt, and now they'll have it baked right into their phone. >> very neat. yeah, i'm excited to see that the siri updates the iphone 15 camera is amazing. so good. i often use it to shoot my stories, so i can't wait to see the difference. with the 16 upgrades. i hear there's some rumors circulating about what we can expect. >> yeah, the cameras are really kind of the biggest thing with with iphones. it's the reason a lot of people might upgrade. but with the next iphones, which we're assuming will be called the iphone 16, there will be larger image sensors that can help with getting better quality photos. and the really interesting thing here is that if you have an iphone 15 pro or

3:14 pm

pro max, you'll notice that there's an action button, which is that physical button on the side of your phone. there are rumors that say there will be another physical button kind of close to that, and it's essentially a camera shutter button. so you can, you know, just push that to take photos or swipe to zoom in and out, which is kind of interesting to have a hardware version of that instead of just tapping on your screen. but the other really cool update is potentially right now, the way it works is that if you have the most expensive iphone, the iphone 15 pro max, then you have five x optical zoom, which is the higher quality zoom. but potentially when the iphone 16 rolls out both the pro models, the more expensive one and the less expensive one will both have five x zoom, so you can take better, better concert photos and videos is really the biggest thing that i can think of there. >> yeah, across the board. i'm just picturing all those selfies happening with that extra button. now this of course is a big step for apple as it's the last major tech company to double down on ai integration. and there's still a lot of people who are unfamiliar with how software like chatgpt works. it sounds like apple's keen on

3:15 pm

expanding that network with other ai partners. >> yeah, apple kind of teased during its wwdc keynote a few months ago that open ai isn't the only company they're looking to collaborate with and think about companies like google that are, you know, expanding things like gemini, which is their version of ai. there have been rumors about potentially apple and google working together and collaborating on ai, but we still don't know yet if that will happen, when it will happen. but again, that that really key thing here is that if ai is baked into your iphone, something you already use, if you're not inclined to use ai and other any other capacity, if it's on your iphone and you want, you know better search results or you want to chat, you know with with siri, but you want to level it up a bit and use chatgpt, it'll just, you know, make that more accessible for more people. >> yeah, we're seeing that those features with google now for those who don't have the latest model, you're probably wondering, i certainly am. when do we get to see these perks once the iphone is available? do you know what other systems these features will arrive on?

3:16 pm

>> yeah. so if you when it comes to apple intelligence for example, that's something that will be available on the iphone pro iphone 15 pro models. so if you have just the baseline iphone 15 or if you're like me and you have the iphone 14 lineup devices, then you will not have access to apple intelligence. so but that'll, you know, hopefully come out of the box when you get the iphone 16. it'll be baked in there. and then the cool up thing, the cool update that a lot of people will be getting a lot more people will be getting is ios 18, and that's the latest software upgrade from apple that will include features like. the thing i'm most excited about is rcs messaging, which will make texting android users a lot less archaic. those are things that people with a variety of apple devices will be able to tap into. >> do you expect these new ai features to raise prices? >> that's the big question. >> anytime apple, you know, announces a new lineup, people wonder how much more am i going to have to pay for this? the hope is that it won't because it's been a few years where it hasn't necessarily raised the

3:17 pm

price of its baseline models. but with ai integration, other companies like samsung have raised prices on some of their more expensive devices. so it's possible that apple could say, hey, you're getting a lot more functionality in this device, and therefore we're going to raise the prices and make you pay for it. so we'll have to see. >> and i know you mentioned the ios 18 is next. that roll out expected later this fall. do we know when exactly. >> we're anticipating probably sometime later in september, probably ahead of the rollout of apple intelligence. and so i think people a lot of people are really eagerly awaiting that. the developer versions and the beta are have been out for a while, but the public version, we're still waiting on and we have about a minute left, and i do want to ask you about the sneak peek of apple's latest watch series. >> what's new with this new model and the airpods? >> yeah, the biggest thing with the apple watch is that it'll likely get thinner, bigger screens. >> it could have more health tracking capabilities like blood pressure monitoring and even detecting sleep apnea. and then for airpods, the most exciting thing is there could be two versions. one, that's kind of

3:18 pm

the standard version, one that's a little bit more expensive, but has active noise cancellation so that you don't have to get airpods pro if you want to have that feature. so a bit more variety there and slightly upgraded features. >> yeah, that noise cancellation feature is key. that will be neat to see. all right abrar, thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> absolutely. well up next, going back to baywatch, the hit show now making a comeback in a new docu series and some of the

3:19 pm

let's go! hustle! is getting started. well, we did that 30 years ago, when california first took on the tobacco industry. this is not just about access. it's about the message it sends... now smoking is down 60 percent. lung cancer 42 percent. a couple of our cities have already ended tobacco sales. a california without big tobacco isn't just possible, it's already happening.

3:20 pm

watching those iconic red swimsuits and slo mo beach runs are getting another moment in the sun. that's thanks to a new four part docu series from abc news studios. entertainment reporter joelle gargiulo has this beachfront preview. >> it was a cultural phenomenon that defined an era. >> baywatch is a fantasy. >> baywatch is sexy.

3:21 pm

>> baywatch was the number one show in the world. some people stand in the darkness and now, 23 years after the final episode of baywatch aired, it's back to the beach. it was a wild time, but this time the world's most famous lifeguards are taking a nostalgic dive with dozens of new cast interviews and never before seen footage exploring the show that became the pop culture ambassador for the american dream around the world, people were enchanted with it. >> we just wanted to really, like, give you the real story, the real people. >> it's all in the new docu series after baywatch moment in the sun. >> this process has been just absolutely amazing, and it's so exciting that we get to be reunited with all of our, you know, fellow castmates. >> it's been like having everyone back together. oh it's fantastic. >> you know, we all stay in pretty close contact. it was like, cool because he had this heartfelt desire to tell the story that hasn't been heard. it's like, no, i want people to know how you impacted my life. it's just such an honor and a

3:22 pm

pleasure. you know, it's really, really cool. >> while the documentary does dive deep, there's something i needed to investigate. we cannot talk about baywatch and not talk about the slow motion running. i once heard that where that came about was because they were lik, four minutes short, and then they saw, you know, an attractive woman walking. they put her in slow mo. they were like, that's good. and decided to use that to fill the time. >> slow motion run any time. >> one of the producers used to film the olympic runners and he saw, like, the muscles and everything in slow motion. so they're like. we're a little short on story. let's just have carmen run in slow motion and look hot, or let's have tracy run down the beach. >> i had to slow myself down because i'm a little competitive. so if someone said run, i would think, oh, i have to go fast. but no, you can't do that in slow mo, because then everything goes up and down like this and that's not attractive. >> and there's a real technique to running in slow motion. you get like a little stay in the frame, lean in and go do it look like, though you're still saving lives. >> yeah, we still need to look

3:23 pm

like that. but then it would be slow. concentrate. >> you got to run with a little bit of a ballerina foot because you want the water to splash. you can't forget this. >> well, a wild reunion it will be. that was joel gargiulo reporting the series after baywatch. moment in the sun premieres wednesday on hulu. disney, of course, is the parent company of hulu and abc seven. up next, looking ahead to the long labor day weekend, as we look live here, we're helping you plan with some travel tips and what's in store for the forecast. and remember, abc seven news is streaming 24 over seven. you can get the abc seven bay area app and join us whenever we have a drug, homelessness, and economic recovery crisis,

because the system that's supposed to fix things is the problem. record budgets. fewer officers. business killing bureaucracy. the insiders won't change a system built for their benefit. i'm daniel lurie and san francisco needs a mayor unafraid to take on the status quo, bring accountability, and stop the excuses.

were trending toward the hottest day of the week tomorrow. here's abc seven meteorologist drew tuma. >> here's a look at the accuweather headlines. we're calling for that warming trend underway here today. you already see the sunshine. the warming trend continues to accelerate tomorrow and into wednesday. we're calling it august. heat around here. certainly feels like summer out there no matter where you are. by the end of the week and into the upcoming holiday weekend, we will find cooler weather moving back into the picture. we'll have the marine layer coming back, so expect morning clouds, afternoon sunshine through the holiday weekend, but very pleasant temperatures near average. our weather today good to moderate air quality as high pressure gets control over our atmosphere. kind of acts like a lid. so we have those hazy spots from time to time. one change in our pollen levels. if you remember last week pollen levels were low. now they're moderate. elm trees are the main allergen this week, and the uv index is

3:27 pm

an eight, which is very high. looking at the forecast today inland, we're in the mid 90s for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. it is going to be a warm day mid 80s later on today. and then along the coast we'll find increasing sunshine over the next couple of hours. but later on this evening our marine layer fills back in and daytime highs will be in the mid 60s. highs in our microclimates in the south bay will be in the 80s and 90s later on. this afternoon. getting hot out there above average for this time of the year along the peninsula 82 in san mateo, 81 in palo alto. upper 60s along the coast with increasing sunshine, the next few hours now across the city, we are seeing some clouds along the coast. we'll get some sunshine here over the next couple of hours. temperatures are warm downtown. we'll hit 74. even daly city getting into the low 70s later on today in the north bay. it is a hot afternoon. 90 in napa, 90 in san rafael, 92 in santa rosa, 80 in sausalito. so it is quite warm along the water. in the east bay it is sunny. it is warm. 86 hercules the same in newark, 88

3:28 pm

in castro valley and then inland. today we're hot in the 90s, 95 in walnut creek, 97 in antioch, pleasanton. up to 94 degrees overnight tonight, just some patchy coastal cloud cover reemerging clear skies away from the coast and overnight lows, mainly in the 50s and in the 60s. a quick update on tropical storm mona. it's really looking lackluster. over the last few hours you could see a lot of this cloud cover is falling apart. still, winds are 65mph. it is about 200 miles south of honolulu. it will push off to the west over the next day or two, moving away from hawaii. so we will find improving conditions in hawaii tomorrow especially. sunshine is back in full force across much of the region. back here at home gets even hotter here on tuesday. you see those temperatures approaching 100 degrees inland. tomorrow is the hottest day of the week. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. our warming trend is underway here. it is hot tomorrow. we'll keep it warm by the end of the week. cooler weather moves in here and over

3:29 pm

the weekend those temperatures are back to average for this time of year. >> all right. thank you. drew will still looking to get away for labor day. there are lots of last minute deals on airfare, but our travel expert says it's also a great time to think beyond the holiday. >> we're coming into what we call in the industry a shoulder season. it's between a peak and a low season, and it can be a really great time of the year to take advantage of better prices, as well as temperate weather. you can go into europe for 535. that's over to milan from the bay area. so you know, there are great deals to be had, not less people are traveling, but there are just more flights on the schedules, about 5% more domestically. we're seeing versus last year. and even with so many people traveling, there's a discrepancy. so we're actually at the time period when there's been an oversupply of flights and that's been great for a consumer. >> now, another important tip if you buy an airplane ticket and it later goes on sale, you can call the airline to match that price. all right, here's

3:30 pm

something fun. sfo is celebrating a new honor today. the airport is home to the cutest canine in the tsa. we first told you about barney last week. adorable. he's now crowned the winner of this year's tsa cutest canine contest, and i see why he's so adorable. a five year old german shorthaired pointer who screens for explosives at sfo. today's winning announcement coincides of course, with national dog day. very fitting. barney will now be featured on the cover of tsa's 2025 canine calendar that comes out in december. we'll have to grab that one. so cute. all right. thank you for joining us for abc seven news at three. world news tonight with david muir starts right now. i'll see you ba tonight, several breaking stories as we come on the air. the dangerous heat wave and the storms in the middle of the country, and then moving into the east. millions on alert.
