on December 19 1908 in Johannesburg South Africa to Robert and Annie Byth lie immigrated to Chicago IL in 1913 He graduated from North western University with degrees in Civil Mechanical and Industrial En gineering and did graduate work at Penn State He was a Lt Com mander in the US Navy from 1936 to 1946 and served in the Pa cific during WWI1 having been at Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941 He worked for the Department of Defense as a civilian until his retire ment in 1974 He was a member of the Masonic Order He was preced ed in death by his wife of 53 years Amber He is survived by his daughter Nancy Westgate and hus band Brian Westgate of South lake TX and son Kurt Byth and wife Jan Stewart Byth of Houston TX grandchildren Kendra Nuckels and Hallie and Janice Byth Memo rial late Peggy french was a British Citizen and war bride who moved to Ohio with her husband shortly after WWI1 When she was 7 years old Susan witnessed an auto acci dent in Ohio that killed her father brother grandfather and grand mother As a result Susan and her mother and sister moved to En gland where Susan attended ele mentary and high school Susan moved from England to Tulsa in the and met illness Erlene was born July 31 1933 to Joseph anning and Belle Sumter anning in Porter OK the youngest of 10 children Her family farmed cotton in the Gar Creek area in the and They later moved to Glenpool OK then to Tulsa where she at tended Central High School Erlene met and married her devoted hus band Kenneth Gadlage who moved to Tulsa after returning from serv ing with the Marines in Korea to get his A Aviation certification They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2006 She was an avid gardener and loved nature and animals She loved to fish for crappie and was an ex pert at it Erlene was an artist sew ing painting and drawing Early American primitive reproduction quilts dolls and other items She spent many years selling her cre ations as well as primitive antiques and collectibles at the Tulsa lea Market and was once featured in the Living Section of the Tulsa World Erlene was preceded in death by her parents a son at birth Stephen Allen her brothers enlisted at 17 a few years after W1925 crash of the rigid blimp like USS Shenandoah Unlike the flexible blimps that fly over sporting events the rigid airships had internal frames Despite that disaster over southern Ohio which killed 14 Lust went to work running engines on the airships first on the USS Los Angeles then on the USS Akron based in Lakehurst Lust was on leave when the Akron crashed into the sea off Long Beach Is land on April 3 1933 Seventy three of the 76 men aboard died Within two years the Navy ended its rigid hulled airship program It was two years after that that a
