MIAMI (AP) — Historically Black West Coconut Grove is a majority Black neighborhood hidden among some of the most affluent areas in Miami that once boomed with sports and economics. It nurtured the early careers of Olympic gold medalists and football stars like NFL receiver Amari Cooper and former pro running back Frank Gore. Today, few remnants of that proud Black heritage exist. Years of economic neglect followed by recent gentrification have wiped out much of the neighborhood’s cultural backbone. Now, this once-thriving community is at risk of extinction.

The Florida Panthers are up 2-0 with the series shifting to Edmonton for the next two games. Fans and broadcasters say calling hockey games in ASL is a welcome challenge given the speed of the games. Bob Madden, a 68-year-old Michigan man who is deaf, watched Game 2 and says it is fast but better than closed captioning. The interim CEO of the National Association of the Deaf called it a groundbreaking moment.
Dozens of hikers became ill during trips to waterfalls near the Grand Canyon
Dozens of tourists say they became ill after visiting a popular Arizona tourist destination known for its towering blue-green waterfalls. Hikers have reported symptoms that include vomiting and diarrhea during a time of excessive heat. The waterfalls are on the Havasupai Tribe's reservation, which is accessible only by foot, helicopter or by riding a horse or mule. Local health officials say they received at least one report from a group of people getting gastrointestinal illnesses. The Havasupai Tribe Tourism Office says it regularly tests water from a spring that most campers draw from on their visits, and it's been found safe for human consumption.
Trump refers to Milwaukee as 'horrible' just before the city hosts the Republican convention
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump reportedly called Milwaukee a “horrible city” during a meeting with Republican lawmakers. The comment on Thursday drew disagreements from those who were there about what Trump meant when referring to the heavily Democratic city that will host the Republican National Convention next month. Trump made the comments during a meeting with members of Congress as part of a visit to Capitol Hill, his first since leaving office. Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung posted on X that Trump “was talking about how terrible crime and voter fraud are.” President Joe Biden's campaign said, “If Donald Trump thinks Milwaukee is so horrible, then he shouldn’t come to our city.”
Supreme Court, siding with Starbucks, makes it harder for NLRB to win court orders in labor disputes
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has made it harder for the federal government to win court orders when it suspects a company of interfering in unionization campaigns in a case that stemmed from a labor dispute with Starbucks. The justices on Thursday tightened the standards for when a federal court should issue an order to protect the jobs of workers during a union organizing campaign. The court rejected a rule that some courts had applied to orders sought by the National Labor Relations Board in favor of a higher threshold, sought by Starbucks, that must be met in most other fights over court orders, or injunctions.
Utah Hockey Club will be the name of the NHL team in Salt Lake City for its inaugural season
The NHL team that moved from Arizona to Salt Lake City will be known as the Utah Hockey Club during its inaugural season. Ownership announced the move Thursday and unveiled the initial logos and jerseys that will be used in 2024-25 before permanent branding from names to logos are established following a fan vote. They were revealed in concert with the $1.2 billion sale of the club to Smith Entertainment Group closing. The color scheme of light blue, black and white is expected to last long term.
Ex-Illinois star Terrence Shannon Jr., potential first-round NBA draft pick, not guilty of rape
Former Illinois standout Terrence Shannon Jr., a potential first-round NBA draft pick, was found not guilty Thursday on a rape charge in Kansas. A jury in Douglas County spent less than two hours deliberating the verdict. The 23-year-old Shannon was accused of committing sexual assault last September while visiting Kansas for a football game between the Illini and the Jayhawks. He was charged with rape or an alternative count of sexual battery, which led to him being suspended for six games; a a federal judge later reinstated him, ruling that his civil rights had been violated. Shannon is among the top guards available in the draft, which is scheduled for June 26-27. He was first-team All-Big Ten and a third-team All-American this past season.
Sen. John Fetterman was at fault in car accident and seen going 'high rate of speed,' police say
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Police say Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman was seen driving at a “high rate of speed” just before he rear-ended another car on Interstate 70 in Maryland. A state police report said Fetterman was at fault in Sunday morning's crash. Police say both cars were towed and Fetterman, his wife Gisele and the motorist he hit were all hospitalized for minor injuries. Fetterman’s office has acknowledged the accident, saying he was treated for a bruised shoulder and discharged within hours. Court records show that Fetterman pleaded guilty earlier this year in Pennsylvania to a citation for exceeding the speed limit by 34 mph.
No charges in killing of gray wolf in southern Michigan. Experts stumped about how it got there.
Wildlife experts have hit a dead end in their quest to determine how a gray wolf arrived in southern Michigan for the first time in more than 100 years. The wolf was killed in January by a hunter who said he had mistaken it for a coyote. That was shocking. Gray wolves are common in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but southern Michigan doesn’t offer the proper habitat. Wolf expert Brian Roell says officials "don’t know how it got there.” Meanwhile, a prosecutor says no charges will be filed because the hunter believed he was shooting a coyote.
Large whale group spotted off New England includes orca eating a tuna, dozens of endangered species
Scientists say a large number of whales visiting the waters off New England included an uncommon sighting of an orca eating a tuna and an unusually large group of an endangered species of whale. Officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday a research flight made 161 sightings of seven different species of whale on May 25 south of Martha’s Vineyard and southeast of Nantucket. The agency says the sightings included 93 of sei whales, and that is one of the highest concentrations of the rare whale during a single flight. It says there were also two sightings of orcas, which aren't common off Massachusetts.
