THE OKLAHOMAN NEWS0K.COM 12A TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 2011 METRO STATE Deaths Firemen worked an early morning apartment fire Monday at 12478 Trail Oaks Drive near NW 122 and May Avenue in Oklahoma City. PHOTO BY PAUL B. SOUTHERLAND, THE OKLAHOMAN Apartment dwellers displaced after fire To watch a video about the fire, go to NewsOK.com. lights flickered. The pop happened when a heating unit kicked on, he said.

Fire Deputy Chief Cecil Clay said four upstairs units were destroyed and the four downstairs ones were heavily damaged by smoke and water. The building had no fire walls. No injuries were reported. It took firefighters more than 30 minutes to get the blaze under control as the roof mostly burned away. The fire caused $350,000 damage, Clay said.

Clay said an electrical short is to blame, but exactly what malfunctioned is still being investigated. Firefighters were able to salvage some apartment dwellers' belongings by throwing tarps over items such as TVs and furniture in the downstairs units. The Red Cross assisted 15 people who were displaced by the fire. BY ROBERT MEDLEY Staff Writer rmedleyc3opubco.com Firefighters battled a fire Monday that burned the roof off several apartments near NW U2 and May Avenue. Flames burst through the roof of Aspen Place Apartments, 12478 Trail Oaks Drive, about 6:45 a.m.

Firefighters evacuated the complex and asked for extra crews to keep the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. Natalie Alexander, 24, lived in an apartment next to the unit where the fire started in the attic. Alexander said she was awake and had smelled something burning. She said her daughter, Nyla Jones, 2, was asleep. The man who lived across from her upstairs unit knocked on her door and told her to get out, Alexander said, and she left with the toddler in a blanket.

Alexander lost everything she owned and said she does not have renter's insurance. "It hasn't hit me yet," Alexander said as she stood outside the burned building. "I've got my daughter and I'm good with that." Alexander went to stay with her father, who arrived at the scene. What caused it? The man who said the fire started in the attic space above his apartment did not want to give his name. He told investigators he heard a pop and the EDMOND Doolen, Shelly Lynn, 48, medical practice manager, died Saturday.

Catoosa slaying prompts reward 4i MM 1 Clint Gray Aaron Hughes Kristan Maloy Trio face charges in robbery, assault BY MICHAEL KIMBALL Staff Writer mkimballc3opubco.com CATOOSA The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever is responsible for the 2008 death of a man in Catoosa. Carter Wayne Leach, 32, was found dead in the back of a pickup on April 26, 2008, OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown said. Officials reported in 2008 that Leach was last seen alive about a month before his body was found.

Investigators said he was on his way to Tulsa on March 28, 2008, to collect a drug debt and had been dead about four weeks when his body was found wrapped in a shower curtain in the bed of the pickup. The pickup was in the parking lot of the Kicks 66 Truck Stop at 16141 Skelly Drive, Brown said. Investigators have no suspects. Officials ask anyone with information to call the OSBI hot line at (800) 522-8017. Callers may remain anonymous.

BY MICHAEL KIMBALL Staff Writer mkimballc3opubco.com LEXINGTON Police arrested three people in connection with the March 30 robbery of a Lexington convenience store during which the clerk was given a beating described by Police Chief Deana Stan-dridge as the worst she'd ever seen. Aaron Hughes, 25, Clint Gray, 19, and Kristan Maloy, 21, all of Norman, were arrested Thursday on complaints of robbery, assault and battery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, Standridge said Monday. They were booked into the Cleveland County jail. They had not been charged and bail had not been set Monday afternoon. The clerk was released from the hospital after an overnight stay, Standridge said.

He received staples in his head from cuts received when he was pistol -whipped during the robbery. Police accuse Hughes and Gray of robbing the One East convenience store, State Highway 39 and 84th Avenue SE, about 10 p.m. March 30, Standridge said. Investigators accuse Maloy of driving the getaway car. The clerk had indentations in his skull from blows suffered during the beating as the men robbed the store, Standridge said.

Hughes told investigators he chose the store because he thought it didn't have video cameras, but cameras had recently been installed. Investigators think Hughes also planned to begin "a home -invasion spree" in Cleveland County, Standridge said.
