I am considering buying one (or both!) of these games in Japanese. Why? Because I'm a crazy Harvest Moon and Japan fangirl. BtN seems to be one of the more popular games on this board, but I've never played it myself, so I was wondering if I could get people's general thoughts on it? Is it a lot like HM64? What makes it better or worse than other HMs, etc. I'm not asking you to choose for me, I simply want to make an informed decision.
And if you've played the Japanese-only For Girl version, I'd especially like to hear about that. I'm guessing it's very similar to MFoMT though, which I do own.
(For the record, I know I'll need imported hardware to run either of these games.)

BTN boy and girl is available for the PSP in the english version. BtN is available for PS in english, but BtN:for girl is only available in japanese.
they are exactly the same game, only with a male and female main character. however, in the girl version, your game ends when you get married, which (I think) is forced after 3 years. I know the game ends when you get married, but it may not be a forced marriage, like in AWL.
Both take place in Mineral Town. The characters in BtN are the same as the characters in FoMT. there are some differences with Won/Van, and some storylines are a bit different. The town layout is similar, but not a perfect match. The rucksack and using items and tools are the same, but some aspects of FoMT are missing in BtN. mythic stones, goddess gems, kappa jewels, truth gems, and cursed tools are missing. I think both mines in BtN have only 10 floors. The H. Goddess is not a marriageable candidate in BtN neither are Won, Gourmet, or Kappa in BtN:G.
I think that covers the main points.
I haven't played 64, but I don't think that it's similar at all.

BTN has a very laid-back, relaxed feeling to it. you feel like laying down on mother's hill and watching the clouds or sitting on the beach and playing in the waves when you play. it does a very good job of transporting you into a mindset, which i really like.
i find 64 to be the better game, though, and 64 feels like an actual village rather than some cut off virtual world, as lovely as it is. if you have played FoMT, it is similar since FoMT was the updated version of BTN, but BTN has a much more relaxed feeling instead of the robotic mega farming and mega mining and mega fishing of FoMT. you do have a time limit like in 64, but you have to try pretty hard to fail. the characters are the same as 64 but rearranged (FoMT has the same roles) and more robotic feeling than 64, at least to me, because they don't have as much dialouge, backstory, and interaction with each other. it is more mechanized in feeling than 64 because it lacks the many layers of depth and all of the many things to do (sometimes the days in BTN seem endlessly long...), but still very lovely.
i would recommend it.

If you have a US-region PSP, then you can buy the BtN Boy & Girl ports in Japanese and you won't need to modify/import any consoles (PSP, like the DS, is region free). I don't know if it's easy to find anymore, but it would certainly be more readily available than the old Playstation games.

64 > BTN games
BTNFG only ends if you get married. So you can be unmarried forever. You don't have special guys to marry though.
Really I don't know why you wouldn't get the English PSP version which has both games in one.
Unless you can read Japanese? Then go all out but the English one is cheaper.
If you really want to know why not read the BTNFG's faq on gamefaqs? It's probably one of my favorite faqs for that game, and the only one too I think xD
BTN is a watered down version of HM64. The characters were more charming and more developed. So don't compare them D:
But I will say that BTN is MUCH better then Mineral Town. But I don't hate em or anything, I love all the HM games.
I treat BTNFG as it's own game cause it was the first girls HM game and I do like wearing the dress on the Goddess Festival <3

If I had a PSP, getting Boy & Girl would be an excellent idea, but I don't plan on buying one for various reasons that I don't feel like getting into here.
I like collecting my favorite game series in their original Japanese forms, plus I am learning Japanese and hope at some point I'll be able to understand them somewhat (maybe they can even help me). The reason I brought this up in the first place is because the games are currently available on eBay and are very tempting.

You could look at Sky Render's, Hitchhiker's Guide to HM: BTN which has screenshots and stuff. Not sure what the current rules are for links - just google "skyrender btn" and it'll be the first hit.
I have For Girl but haven't played it. BTN is very similar to HM64. It's worth playing... but being a fangirl and collector myself, I say BUY BOTH for your collection.

Well... yes, I have thought about it. I do want the games themselves, but I might use a Very Bad Thing so I can play them on my computer.

Awesome! I'm looking at it right now, thanks for the tip! I could be wrong, but I don't think linking sites is frowned upon unless it contains illegal content.
I don't know if I can afford both right now, but you're right, I think if I like what I see I'll want them both eventually.

Too bad you don't have a PSP. So I guess if you want my advice get it or the other option, or both. After all that's how I used to play the game originally till it's release on PSP
If you need help I'll help you too! It's been a while since I played it and I'm sad it ends when you get married cause it's a really good game(totally prefer it over the guy version. They really did a good job with the first girl version if you ask me. The MFoMT is just a watered down version of FoMT D:<)
Your character cooks on the Starry Night Festival, you get like a jewelry box, beauty points, the goddess dress and so forth. :D

You'll need to find way to modify your Playstation if you want to play BtNFG on it. If you don't have any experience soldering or fixing electronics, I suggest you find someone who does. Some old game shops might mod the console for you.
