The Ms. PacMan Video Gore: A History of ViolenceIn 1982, a new video game character was introduced to the world: Ms. Pac-Man. As the successor to the popular game Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man was an instant success and became one of the most successful arcade games of all time. But Ms. Pac-Man was also controversial due to its violent content. Click here to know more about this gore video :https://lnkd.in/dP9YPG_A

Great lesson here about the importance of trusting your gut, of making a bet, and being so confident in that bet that you're willing to live with the ramifications.Goldeneye is one of the greatest video games in history. A big part of this is its infinitely fun multiplayer. According to this story, it wasn't even supposed to be in the game, but by the time the publishers found out, it was too late to take out. The takeaway here is not to just go rogue when you feel like it. Because here's the thing -- the gameplay is absolutely FLAWLESS. No glitches. Fast. Smooth. Nothing feels cheap. Imagine if these guys revealed at the 11th hour that there's a multiplayer, and the multiplayer was buggy and discombobulated. Maybe they'd just kill the game altogether? There weren't high expectations, and budget was low. This was a risk, but a very calculated one.Another thing I bring up with my students about the Goldeneye story is its branding impact. The James Bond franchise was at a nadir when this game came out. Goldeneye itself is not a great movie. This game single-handedly saved the trajectory of the entire franchise. By being such a perfect game that everyone enjoyed, it allowed an entirely new generation of adolescents to fall in love with the many characters that made it such a popular franchise in the first place.Tomorrow Never Dies came out a few months after this game was released. It's not a great Bond movie either. But it was the fourth-highest grossing box office of 1997. That's not coincidental. Imagine if the Goldeneye game was a dud -- the franchise would not be as relevant as it is today. To that, just because perfect is the enemy of good, doesn't mean good enough has to be your ally. It’s not permission to be sloppy. Get it right the first time around.

Can you be sad about people dying when you've never met them?But... I kind of feel like I knew Murayama-san a little. I think I get what he thought about big stuff like politics, war, being brave, friends, true loss, and sticking together despite the odds. I think I understand his love for telling stories and how much he liked video games. Part because of him and his team at Konami, and because of the first two Suikoden games (Suikoden II is one of my favorite games of all time), I also love stories and video games. And I think that through the games, I learned a thing or two about the themes he cared about.Games do have things to tell. It's naïve to think otherwise. But that's not their main purpose: games should make us have fun. Fun with friends. Fun with ourselves. Let our imaginations free. Let our feelings be free. Help us learn the important stuff by ourselves without someone having to spell it out for us."As the creators, we've left plenty of room for your imagination to run wild, so make use of your imagination and enjoy yourself! That's the biggest thing I ask of players".Goodbye, Murayama-san. I never met you, but I am sure we'll get to truly feel your love for games in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

No ghost trap? No problem, use your phone to trap the latest Ghouls from Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. 👻🎬 For the latest addition to the Ghostbusters franchise, Sony has released an AR game, featuring ghost nemesis, old and new.🤳 Users are instructed to place a ghost trapper in their environment and tap the screen to capture the pesky ghouls.Once you’ve trapped the ghost, you’ll be prompted to “call” and receive a fun video message from one of the new stars from the movie. ⭐️ After completing the experience, users are invited to buy tickets directly from the web page which would unlock further ghoul-trapping games. A fun incentive for users to prolong their in-game experience. #augmentedreality #ARexperience #marketing

Helldivers 2 has everyone talking about Starship Troopers and clearly the game makers were inspired by the film. Its obviously not the first game to borrow its concept from a film...Payday = HeatGTA = Scarface / Miami ViceUncharted = Indiana JonesMetal Gear Solid = Escape from NYCyberpunk 2077 = Blade RunnerMany examples of this. One of the things we realized at Universal was that many of our bigger IPs had already been "done" as games - just not with our IP!Its not that these game makers wouldn't prefer to use the movie IP. But studios give you every incentive not to work with them. First, is the practice of minimum guarantees, a concept really borrowed from consumer products. I've seen so many potentially great deals killed because the MG being asked for simply was too big. The dev was willing to fund development, but couldn't also divert millions more in upfront advance payments. The dirty secret about these MG payments is they can't be realized as revenue until the termination of the deal anyway, and even then only as a one-time event, which has a poor quality of earnings because you killed the deal and won't anniversary it the next year! The second thing that kills these deals is franchise bureacracy. Sometimes, its overly constricting franchise rules - things like so much lore that there's no interesting creative space for game creatives to do something new. I remember with Star Wars, Lucas wanted us to set a new mobile game after Return of the Jedi but before Force Awakens. This meant we couldn't use Jedi, or Sith, or the Empire, or the First Order or most of the main characters (Luke was in seclusion.) Unsurprisingly, the game flopped. But it also often can just be complex approval issues. Many of these legacy IPs from the 80s or 90s have contracts that didn't explicitly contemplate video games. Or where actors had approval rights they don't want to give without a big payout. It can take months and even years to wade through it all.I've always felt Hollywood needed to get more serious about this - invest in promising IP by pre-clearing the rights, streamlining approvals and giving game creatives the latitude to reinvent the IP for games as a medium. Otherwise, its much easier for game makers to "borrow" your concept and create their own take on it which they can own and builds enterprise value for them, not you.

Though Silent Hill was my favourite game of 1999, it’s not my favourite in the series. Its sequel is, but even that was overshadowed by other releases. Now 25 years on, I think that speaks to the longevity of the Silent Hill series. It is one of the most influencial horror properties in the games industry, playing on technical elements like the fog that hides complicated buildings for less programming. In turn, that unintentionally works as one of its key horror elements, when enemies emerge from the fog and shout ‘boo’. Over time, the series grew into an expanded lore that continues to fascinate me. Passerbys who stumble into the town of Silent Hill are drawn by an interdimensional presence, thinking it's of their own mistake or volition. The series also plays on general shortcomings everyone has, such as procrastination or temptation, and reclassifies them as demonic entities to chase and punish you. Exemplified in masterclass games like Silent Hill 2 and P.T., Silent Hill leaves a legacy of self-reflection on our own struggles, mental health, and the helping hands of friends in the same boat. Judging by content now, those days could very well be long gone, but have served to influence visionaries in today’s world, from the Upside Down in Stranger Things to the horror genre of modern gaming.

An interesting scenario to follow in the gaming world! PocketPair's CEO, creator of Palworld, asserts "we have absolutely no intention of infringing upon the intellectual property of other companies," but since the games release a few days ago, the reddit/pokemon community has been very vocal in expressing their disapproval in the similarities. Here are two interesting articles summarizing the controversy and the PocketPair's possession.https://lnkd.in/eUKgkyk3https://lnkd.in/eZx4ZBKS
