A League of Their Own Cast and Character Guide: Who's Who in the TV Show? (2024)

A League of Their Own Cast and Character Guide: Who's Who in the TV Show? (1)

“A League of Their Own” hits Amazon Prime Video in series form on Aug. 12. The Rockford Peaches return to the small screen, with new players and side characters, in a new story based on Penny Marshall’s 1992 film of the same name. The spirit and joy are there, along with personalities that are similar to those of some of the movie characters.

Rosie O’Donnell even makes an appearance later on in the show as a totally different character that speaks to the expansive lens of the TV show. Family members, friends, fiancées and more cheer on the ballplayers on the four teams in the Midwest in this 1943-set show.

Here’s a complete cast and character guide to the “A League of Their Own” TV series.

Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobsen)

Carson Shaw has dreamt of playing baseball ever since her dad shared all of his knowledge with her while she was growing up. She decides to go for her dream and leave her small hometown in Idaho to try out for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in Chicago, meeting Greta and Jo on the way to the field. Carson eventually becomes catcher, an anchoring position, of the Rockford Peaches, where she lives out her ambition and discovers even more about herself. Carson shares the same enthusiasm for the game as Lori Petty’s Kit Keller from the film, and her friendship with Greta evokes the sisterhood between Kit and Dottie.

Jacobson — who also serves as co-creator of the series alongside Will Graham as well as executive producer on the series — previously starred in “Broad City” and also voices Emily in “BoJack Horseman,” Katie in “Mitchells vs. the Machines” and Bean in “Disenchantment.”

Maxine Chapman (Chanté Adams)

Maxine, who goes by Max, dreams of becoming a professional pitcher one day. The fact that she is Black provides just one more obstacle to her playing ball besides the fact that she’s a woman. Max’s mother wants her to work at her salon and eventually run it one day so that she can be an independent Black woman in America, but Max cannot put down her glove. She attempts to secure a tryout in Chicago because she’s from Rockford, but the coaches take one look at her and say no. She also rarely goes anywhere without her best friend Clance.

Adams has previously appeared in “The Photograph” (2020) and “A Journal for Jordan” (2021).

Greta Gill (D’Arcy Carden)

Greta is from New York, and she is best friends with Jo De Luca. Her confidence and poise intimidate Carson. Greta has a knack for teasing information out of Carson that not just anyone could get. She ends up playing first base for the Rockford Peaches and boy can she stretch to snag a throw. Carden’s Gill reminds viewers of Dottie Hinson with her long legs and elegant beauty. D’Arcy Carden has starred alongside Jacobson in “Broad City” in addition to TV roles like Janet in “The Good Place” and Natalie Greer in “Barry.”

Jo Deluca (Melanie Field)

Jo is Greta’s best friend. They show up to the Chicago tryout together. Jo plays third base, and she becomes a valuable slugger for the team. Her loud and proud personality complements Greta’s more reserved one really well. Jo comes very close to Rosie O’Donnell’s character Doris in the 1992 film. Melanie Field has previously appeared in the “Heathers” TV show and Netflix’s “You” as Sunrise Darshan Cummings.

Lupe García (Roberta Colindrez)

Lupe came to tryouts from Mexico, but they call her the Spanish Striker (because they claim Spain is more palatable). She knows her worth as a pitcher, especially under Coach Porter’s instruction. Lupe and Carson butt heads a bit, but it all comes from the love of the game.

Colindrez has appeared in smaller roles in “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” (2015) and Lena Dunham’s “Girls.” More recently, she has starred in “Unidentified Objects” (2021), “The Harper House,” “Vida” and “The Deuce”

Jess McCready (Kelly McCormack)

Jess comes from Canada to play for the Peaches. She is the athletic shortstop who rockets throws to Greta. She forms a close bond with Lupe and Esti. Kelly McCormack has also recently starred in “George and Tammy,” “Departure” and “Ginny & Georgia” on Netflix.

Maybelle Fox (Molly Ephraim)

Maybelle says what she thinks. She plays in the outfield, but she is so excited to get away from home for a change and have some fun. This character seems to combine May (Madonna) from Penny Marshall’s film with Evelyn the blonde outfielder whose rowdy son Winston reeks havoc on the team in the movie.

Molly Ephraim is most well known for her role of Mandy Baxter in “Last Man Standing.” She plaued Alexa Vonn in “Halt and Catch Fire” (2017) as well as Irene Kelly in “The Front Runner” (2018).

Shirley Cohen (Kate Berlant)

Shirley has a lot of fears, and Carson learns that she is a very particular roommate. She plays outfield with Maybelle, and she has a sharp eye. She gets her stride midway through the season with the help of the other women. Shirley combines the personality of Helen from the film with the looks of Betty Spaghetti because she worries about everything but wears Betty’s signature braids. Kate Berlant appeared as Nia in “Search Party,” and she will play Peg in the upcoming film “Don’t Worry Darling” from Olivia Wilde. Smaller past roles include “Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood,” “The Other Two” and “BoJack Horseman.”

Esti González (Priscilla Delgado)

Esti is one of the youngest players, and she came to the team from Cuba. She plays second base, and she is also the fastest runner, perfect for stealing bases. She barely speaks English, which brings about a challenge bonding with her American teammates. Delgado has previously starred in “Killer Book Club,” “Just Before Christ” and “The Protected.”

Clance Morgan (Gbemisola Ikumelo)

Clance accompanies Max to the tryouts in Chicago. She is an avid artist and comic reader, and she recently married Guy. Clance gives viewers a glimpse into Max’s personal life as well as the lives of Black women back in the time of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Ikumelo has previously appeared in “The Last Tree” (2019), “The Power” (2021) and TV shows like “Roadkill” and “Famalam.”

Coach Casey “Dove” Porter (Nick Offerman)

“Dove” is actually a nickname that Porter earned when he killed a bird with his signature fork ball pitch. He boards the Rockford Peaches as their coach, developing a strong bond with Lupe, his star pitcher. He embodies the one and only Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) who is both charismatic and crazy.

Nick Offerman is well-known for roles like Ron Swanson in “Parks and Recreation,” Uncle Miltie in “Pam & Tommy” and Rick Kaepernick in “Colin in Black & White.”
